Thanks Turtle Pug 209x300 In Appreciation January 2011

Our Dog-in-law "Turtle", In Memoriam

Hundreds of years ago, John Donne wrote that “no man is an island entire of itself”.  In this spirit, I enjoy taking a post at the end of each month to thank those who have supported my practice or boosted my morale during the recent past.  If this blog deserves any praise, the following people, as well as those I have thanked at the end of my five previous months of blogging, deserve at least some share of the credit.

I am eager to get started:

Laura Brodsky – I must open with a belated thank you to Ms. Brodsky, a community manager at Meredith Corp. Laura is like a cousin to me since our parents were all close friends for nearly their entire lives.  Laura and I were each the youngest of three siblings and for many years sat at the kids’ table by ourselves (with pride) during the Thanksgiving meal.  We lost touch through the years, but reconnected on Facebook about a year ago.  Right around the holidays, she told me that she “can sure give ‘like family’ approval” to my blogging efforts and that she was “proud” of me.  I cannot express how much this meant, and still means, to me – I am embarrassed that it took me this long to mention it here.  Thank you again, Laura!

Gyi Tsakalakis – I have previously mentioned Gyi, the founder of AttorneySync, which specializes in law firm internet strategy, and do so again.  This month, he again accommodated me with an hour of his time, and gave me outstanding tips about improving this site’s visibility on the web.  I would say as a direct result of Gyi’s generosity and helpful advice, the phone is actually beginning to ring more often around here.  Thank you again, Gyi!

Lew Dymond – A little over a month ago, I joined WealthCounsel, a nationwide group of about 2,500 estate planning attorneys.  Last week, I attended its two-day seminar in Miami, FL.  Mr. Dymond, one of the founders of WealthCounsel,  was the speaker/advisor/professor for the first day and a half.  He has an incredible depth of knowledge in estate planning, and thoroughly filled every minute of his talk with helpful information.  Mr. Dymond is also quite down-to-earth and has a strong appreciation for what clients are looking for from their attorneys.  I feel much more knowledgeable as a result of listening and talking to him.  Thank you again, Lew!

Tom Ahrens – Mr. Ahrens was the other presenter at the WealthCounsel seminar last week.  He is the founder of Legal Directives, LLC, which offers an Emergency Medical Access Plan as discussed in this post.  Mr. Ahrens’ presentation on estate planning maintenance plans was distinctive in that he effectively made his points through using our viewpoints to make his points.  I told him later that he seemed to have missed his calling as a business coach, especially given his highly creative and topical ideas, along with his excellent sense of humor.  Thank you again, Tom!

Michael D. Bonasera, Esq. – Mr. Bonasera, is an estate planning attorney at the Columbus, OH office of Dinsmore & Shohl, LLP, and author of the very comprehensive Ohio Trust & Estate Blog.  Back in December, we both wrote posts on the same day about pending estate tax law changes.  Coincidentally, some of the wording in my post was quite similar to his.  While he posted his article several hours before me, he was very understanding about the coincidence and very generous in his praise of me and my blog.  Soon afterwards, he linked to my blog, which certainly resulted in additional attention coming my way this month.  He is yet another example of the congeniality that exists amongst attorneys in our field.  Thank you again, Michael!

Charles H. Packer, Esq. – Early in the month, I wrote this post about a poor bet I had made about the Eagles-Packers playoff game.  In it, I listed my 10 favorite “Packers”, which included Mr. Packer, a highly prominent estate planning attorney in San Jose, CA.  The very next day, Mr. Packer, with absolutely no knowledge of who I am, had the kindness and munificence to call me personally and thank me for the mention.  What a thoughtful, unnecessary, and “old school” gesture!  Thank you again for the honor, Mr. Packer!

Andrea, Benjamin and Samantha Zucker – My wife (plus proofreader, idea woman, & lifetime support) and two wonderful kids.  These three also endured three days of snow, school closings, power outages, and personal illnesses while I was in Miami last week.

Syma Zucker – My mother.

Carl K. Zucker, Esq. (1934-2002)

Awwwwwwwwwww- I love your blog entries! :) (especially since I was present at your first journalistic endeavors- what was the name of our newspaper? Oh, if I could only find a copy!)

Wasn’t it something like the “Brodsky-Zucker Times — Thanksgiving Edition”? We did that for several Thanksgivings, didn’t we? I remember the topical articles like our sisters’ ping-pong game and the “fashion” page describing what everyone was wearing, as well as the carbon paper that we used to make the copies!

Lots of love to you, Laura!!!
